Research theme
Since the nonhuman primate is the closest experimental animal to human, it is expected to establish the most useful model for human infectious diseases in many aspects. Some pathogenic viruses (HIV-1, for example) can only infect primates and it is difficult to immunopathological analysis in small animal models such as mouse model. Our institute has one of Japan’s leading facility for nonhuman primate infection experiment at P3 level. We establish infection and disease development models using macaque monkeys, and carry out the basic research for clarifying the in vivo pathogenesis and vaccine development of infectious diseases.
