Research theme
Yonehara Group
Our primary interest is to understand molecular mechanism and physiological role of apoptosis. We found cell surface death receptor Fas, and our main purpose is to understand intracellular signals and physiological role of Fas-mediated apoptosis and other types of programed cell death. In conjunction with these studies, we have been trying to identify other cell death-related molecules which play a key role in embryogenesis, tumorigenesis, and immune system.

Masutani Group
We identified Thioredoxin binding protein-2 /thioredoxin interacting protein (Txnip), which is a member of the alpha-arrestin family and regulates many important biological functions such as metabolism. Txnip expression is downregulated in various tumor tissues by epigenetic changes and mutation of Txnip is seen in 7% of bladder cancer patients. Loss of Txnip in mice showed enhanced tumorigenesis. Therefore, Txnip is an actual tumor suppressor. To develop a novel anti-cancer therapy, we are investigating the molecular mechanism of Txnip in cancer suppression. We are also studying redox signaling regulated by thioredoxin, an important protective protein against oxidative stress.
